A picture book entitled Wakan Shūgaen (i.e., Banquet of Chinese and Japanese Paintings) was edited by Shigenaga Nishimura and published in 1759. The book’s thirty-four pictures of flowers and (or) birds drawn by Japanese artists are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Most of these artists were members of the Kanō family which dominated Japanese painting from the 15th to 18th centuries.
